What did he just say?Did the SoG really just say that whole grains are part of a balanced diet?
Yes… yes I did.
Here is the thing. I do not WANT a balanced diet. I want a darn good diet. Balanced to me implies that you are balancing something good with something bad. So if you are eating really really well and want to “balance” your diet. Go ahead and eat grains. I don’t see any truth in advertising issues with claiming that whole grains ARE in fact part of a “balanced” diet. This is merely a misrepresentation in my eyes.
As far as I am concerned, Kellogs can take their “Balanced diet” and shove it. I personally am going to stick to a diet overwhelmingly unbalanced to the side of good and of health.

Yup, “all things in moderation” is something I hear/have heard far to often in my personal fitness evolution. Crock. Folks mean well, I suppose, but break that down and think about it. NO, meth, cigarettes, heroine, sugar, grain, legumes, radon gas, asbestos, are not acceptable at any level, let alone in “moderation”
I’ll take the un-balanced, completely radically one-sided approach to nutrition and exercise. And that’s this whole primal/paleo thing. Absolute lines that are not crossed are far easier than smudgy grey zones open to interpretation. Doesn’t mean I’m aggressive or some sorta straight edge holier than thou kinda guy. Just not fence sitting or moderating, or balancing things in regards to my health.

You got me. I was stunned when I logged into google reader and saw this headline. Even more stunned when I read who wrote it! I completely agree with you. Thanks for the laugh!

Interesting. Seriously. I guess you’re right, and as someone who is constantly striving for balance maybe it’s okay that I’m a little unbalanced.
And a bit funny – I had no idea what to expect when I read the headline. Love the pic!

Tim,
Agreed. I am far from a 100%ist but balanced would be a 50%ist and I don’t think that is good eenough.
David,
I am glad you read the article far enough to catch on!
BEE,
Lol, it wasn’t an attack on you at all. Just a play on words. When I think of your balance, I think of balancing exercise and eating with life. Not balancing good food with bad.

Ha, that’s hilarious! I have also had that thought of how unreasonable us Primal people are, especially when you consider what the Western world calls a healthy diet.
I remember about two weeks ago, cooking up pork in butter and smothering my veggies in coconut oil and thinking “a nutritionist would FLIP about now”. But this high animal product diet has me feeling a million euro and provided me with peace of mind and body (my vegetarian, high grain diet left me with some interesting mental health issues) so I’m just going to stay stubborn and unbalanced and stay sane, thanks.

LOL SOG. GOOD one!!!
This morning at work, someone asked what I had for breakfast. I told them; 2 fried eggs in a lot of butter, sausage and avocado.
They said “oh you took a break from healthy eating today?”
I was stumped, I wanted to ask if they perhaps had special k and lowfat milk as breakfast, I wanted to say something sbout fat is good for you…
But I just sorta said…”ahhh yeay” and walked away.

Epic graphic SoG! Freakin’ funny! Forgive me chorus, but I do sneak in my grains each day and I’m proud. Not much, and usually in the form of a tortilla once or twice per day, but I just consider them carrying cases (edible wrappers) for my ground bison or sauasage. As a professional training partner I do it more becuase I can get away with it. Forgive me.

Mark,
Cracks me up. I have seen a couple of comment on your site from people that you must know that are to that end. “I guess healthy mark is taking a break”. Classic.
Emergefit,
Being from New Mexico, I was once a tortilla junkie myself. Latley I have been making my regular “tortilla foods” in nori wraps instaed and have not been disapointed. One of the hardest time to do without a nice flour tortilla is in sopping up leftover green chile stew. I have gotten used to it though and don’t even really miss tortillas anymore.
I know you do. I still like you though lol

Nice angle! I like it.

Awesome stuff. Now I know what to say when people tell me my diet is unbalanced. I sometimes include grains in my diet but usually as part of a reward meal or when I am out socializing, my main grain treat is Pizza treat myself to a good one every couple of weeks!

Paleoman did in fact eat starch. It was found on the dental material.
March 10th, 2009 - 12:20 pm
LisaR,
The question is what kind of starches and how much. Most likely what you are talking about is probably in the form of tubers and rarely. Regardless… they do illicit the same response and would not be considered ideal or optimal nutrition. Some tubers and starches are better than others (on the glycemic scale). I am ill positioned to argue any historical accuracies with you. What I can tell you is that dropping ALL starches has been of great benefit to me.

While we’re talking carbs…what do you think about potatoes? Do you eat them a lot? Do you recommend them?
March 10th, 2009 - 12:52 pm
Eman,
Potatoes have a high glycemic reponse. I do not eat them. I used to eat sweet potatoes which I think are a far better option. They are much lower on the glycemic index. I don’t really see to much problem with have the occasional sweet potato. I have dropped even sweet potatoes out of my diet but when I first started going primal I had sweet potato chips and fries and baked sweet potatoes a couple times per week.
