In the tradition of primal peach patties, I bring you Caveman cookies. These are a little more moist than the peach patties for those of you that were looking for something more moist. Once again the wife is enamoured with them while I am not overwhelmed (although I do admit they are pretty tasty).
The flavors shown above are Apple, Apple Strawberry and Apple Blueberry.
Apple Caveman Cookies:
Ingredients
- 1 granny smith apple de-seeded
- 1 cup almonds (or other nut)
- 1/2 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
- 1 teaspoon evoo
- 1 Egg
Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients except for egg in a food processor and pulse.
2. Mix in egg.
3. Form into patties. (I made 5 per batch)
4. Bake at 350 degrees until done. (Mine took 45 minutes. These definitely have more moisture than the peach patties)
Apple Strawberry, Apple Blueberry or Other:
- Add in 1/2 cup of berries for pulse. (I used freeze-dried because I had them).
These were very easy and turned out quite good. The wife is happy. They would be pretty good with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg as well.

How does your food processor handle whole nuts? I think I’d be afraid I’d kill mine.
Have you tried cooking with almond meal?
Thanks for listing my site this weekend by the way.

David, Nice blog you have there.
Chris,
I cook with almond meal all the time. My food processor has no difficulty with whole nuts at all. I actually process whole nuts to meal/flour and even down to butter frequently. I just have the cheapy $20 food processor from Target so it would be easy to replace if it did break but it hasn’t shown any signs of having any trouble at all.

Looks good, SoG!
I have one question, and it’s probably an obvious answer, but what is evoo?
February 16th, 2009 - 5:50 pm
HQ,
Sorry about that. Evoo is Extra Virgin Olive Oil

interesting… almost like a ‘fresh’ larabar

Mmmmm, made this yesterday afternoon. Only I made mine in a pan and cut into bars once it cooled. This will be a staple bike ride or day hike food, easy to carry in a ziploc baggie. A sneaky little treat High Carb pals would still eat. But why share, let them eat Little Debbies!?!
Got any tips on making home made yogurt to put on top of this? I have some goat milk yogurt brewing right now, but I already ate all my bars of Cave Man Cookies! Couldn’t wait. Hope my yogurt turns out.

ttfn300,
The original peach patties were created in the interest of making a larabar type edible with less natural sugar than the massive amount of dates in the larabar. So not a completely off base reference there.
Tim,
I would love to make my own yogurt. That is one do it yourself I have not yet conquered though! Glad you enjoyed them.

Back in the 80’s Yogurt Makers were all the rage. Check Craiglists or keep an eye open this summer at garage sales.
I remember that it made fairly decent smooth yogurt – of course not the sweet stuff of today.

Made these last night- and they were a great (super easy) breakfast on the go this morning! Delicious! I can’t wait to experiment with them as well (adding berries and using things like almond meal or almond butter).
Thanks!

In response to Chris’s question about nuts and the food processor: I haven’t had a problem processing nuts in mine either, but if he has issues, especially if the issue is “these turn into more of a paste than a flour,” then freezing the nuts first can be helpful. It might seem a little counterintuitive if you’re worried about blade integrity, but it actually makes the nuts more brittle and therefore easier to break up.
For whole nuts, you can also do a first step of putting the nuts in a sturdy plastic bag and smacking them with a hammer to break them into fragments before the processor gets them, which has the added bonus of being kind of fun and sort of primal. Not as much so as forgoing the plastic bag and hitting them with a rock, but rock dust in my dinner is a little too primal for me.

I finally got a food processor so I made these. Outstanding! I added 2t of raw cacao nibs which was a mistake though – these arent sweet and the cacao just added a bitter aftertaste.
Anyway, great recipe. We’ll chow on these after our dinner of bison/bacon meatloaf (which is also outstanding btw!)
