The Super Bowl is upon us and the manly men in us (yes that goes for you ladies too) are making our plans for descending upon a chow down and slam fest.Superbowl represents one of the only times of year where it is acceptable for 2 manly men to hug out of pure excitement. This year though, ditch the beer keg and the nachos and opt for some more primal fare. Excellent options are often right under your nose in some SoG past posts.
Bro… where are the snacks?
Option #1: A big bowl of nuts will hit the spot. I recommend a bowl of unshelled nuts like unshelled pistachios. Not only will this satisfy the appetite but it will keep people busy and entertained cracking shells.
Option #2: Make a big plate of veggies for dipping. Carrots, celery, broccoli, jicima and sliced cucumbers are all great options. For the dip, use some of your homemade guacamole or salsa… or both!
How to make salsa – get yourself a nice tomato or two. Then go to the pepper section of your supermarket and load up on a variety of delicious looking, different colored peppers. Toss everything in a food processor with some garlic, lime juice and other seasonings (cilantro and chili powder are both good) and pulse. Wala! Delicious salsa.
Option #3: Your buddies can’t get past the fact there are no chips for the dip or to munch on? How bout opting for the healthier (and more delicious) option and making a batch of SoG Sweet Potato chips?
Dude… Where is the brew?
No beer at this party, we are drinking wine. But dude… isn’t that kind of… unmanly? No, not at all. Pretend you are sitting in the owners box instead of the nosebleed seats and enjoy some of the finer things in life. Where would you rather be? You can even turn it into kind of a joke with your buddies as a “theme” for your party.
Um.. bro, where is the man chow?
Option #1: How about some Bacon Buffalo Meatloaf? Make a big enough one to feed everyone!
Option #2: Treat yourself and your buddies to some SoG Primal Pizza.
Option #3: Grill some big, beefy hamburgers! Set up everything just like normal only instead of buns, offer up giant pieces of romaine lettuces. Fold up your burgers in these and enjoy some of the best burgers you and your buddies have ever had.
There are a ton of other options that are out there. Try to think outside the box and get creative this year. Hey… if the Cardinals can make the Super Bowl, anything is possible right?
Next year, I will plan ahead and create some Super Bowl specific recipes for you all!

Greetings SoG! Sorry I checked out for a month — the surf has been way too good here (SoCal) this month to spend even a second in front of my PC. That said, I disagree just a bit here — in that here we go again making an occasion out of eating. F$#ck it’s a football game on a day — a day like any other day. What did yu eat last Sunday? Did it work for you? Then eat it again this Sunday. I’ll take it a step further; I’ll be wathcing the 1st half of the game on my StepMill. Then a modest meal, a beer, and 2nd half. It’s a game, not a holiday!!!! Pardon the intrusion. roy

Hey Roy!
Welcome back! Good surf is a hard thing to pass up. No need to pardon at all. I can totally see where you are coming from on this. I actually will not be watching the game nor will I be going to any get togethers. I shunned televised football (one of my favorite things in the world)this year when I shunned television in general (Can’t stand the commercialism anymore). Thing is though, it IS a social event for a lot of people and social events tend to revolve around food. Wether it SHOULD be a social event is probably still up for debate but you know people… any excuse to partay.

Hey SoG!
It is a social event.
emergefit, I wouldn’t use it as an excuse to eat, but I have the guys from work coming over with their girlfriends/wives ( have the only HDTV and big enough place among the group) and would like to be able to serve up some primal alternatives to the standard fair. There are a few health conscience and they will appreciate having alternatives to chips and crap. with 15 to 20 people coming over couldn’t fit enough StepMills in front of the tv. If being primal meant never having food to share with people that come over and hang out it would be a lonely home indeed. The Superbowl gathering lasts all day, not just the three hours of game.
That said, Sog I am with you on shunning tv, my exception being football and rented movies on a weekend. Sorry for the rant.
Anyway, I appreciate the post, I will definitely have loads of nuts, fire up the grill for the burgers in lettuce and make a few of the Primal pizzas and a meatloaf! Thanks for the ideas!

Hq,
I have found that the easiest method to please a crowd is the nuts, veggies with guac and salsa and the burgers. Simple, affordable and crowd pleasing.

Funny, I killed my TVs a long time ago and only recently brought them back to keep my mom entertained during a visit. Post superbowl, the TV goes, and the reading begins again.
Sorry for my glib comment earlier too, the horse I ride stands too tall some times. Nothing wrong with a party if it’s one that has been earned. Better to have healthy vittles on hand than crap to be sure.

Don’t forget skewers of things. Great finger food–little (or BIG, MANLY) skewers of grilled meat and veggies are definitely good party food…

Rachel,
Meat and veggie skewer! Awesome. Especially done over the grill.

Kill your television…. wasn’t that a song by Ned’s Atomic Dustbin (geez I feel old).
Super Bowl sounds like the perfect excuse for a Bacon Explosion!
And thanks for that bit of ammo regarding wine @ the party. Many’s the time I’ve had to defend the manliness of my “antioxidant” consumption amongst the Silver Bullet crowd.

More primal and low carb fare for TV Snacking:
Cheese plate
Jerky
Hot Wings
Pork Rinds
Hardboiled and/or Deviled Eggs
Hell, a guy can make a cheesecake with great low carb, high fat, moderate protein stats if you wanna get all “Fancy Nancy” for your boys. Top with berries.
SOG, you da man!

I prefer wrapping my burgers in cabbage leaves. More nutritious and crunchier than lettuce.

Follow any of the little tips, too. I used 1/2 of the artificial sweetener called for, and used powdered Splenda. Comes out perfecto!
